My new baby.

The family here were away during the week when it was my birthday. So today they took me out for lunch at a lovely place called Centro in Fairfield. Got a little candle to blow out in the dessert and they sang for me. Afterwards we ended up going to this outlet store called Loehmann’s where they bought me this amazing leather jacket from Michael Michael Kors. It’s to die for ! Already a new favorite. Only wish that I could use it soon, but it’s just too damn hot.

Miss you guys, only 23 days left till Sweden ! XOXO

Useless

Hi ”everyone”. I know I’ve been absolutely useless with updating this bad boy over the summer. But my overwhelming life in the land of opportunities have just taken over. But I’m well and I’m having fun. Out every weekend, sometimes in Stamford, sometimes in New York. Have in the last couple of weeks managed to party a lot, turn 24, meet and loose an old dear friend and a lot more. I’ve got a bit more than 3 weeks left in this country, and boy is that a weird feeling. At the same time as I’m counting the days until I can hug and meet my nearest and dearest, I’m freaking out because there is so much more I want to do. I wanna live here. Well, maybe not in the bubble Darien but NYC would be quite cool. Have taken some pictures so hopefully I will upload and post some of them in the next couple of days. Bare with me…

Lots and lots and lots of love. XOXO

Out and about

High tide versus low tide, it changes every 6 hours.

So this weekend I went out with some of the other au pairs I’ve met so far. Well, I tagged along with Lovisa who knew the other two, Emma F and Emma H. It was Emma F’s last weekend so we were due to party hard. Had some pre drinks at this guy’s house in Stamford, the bigger town next to Darien before NYC. Then we walked to this place called Butterfields, which was kinda cool but really really busy. Had maybe one or two many tequila shots, but poor Lovisa had never tried tequila before… All and all it was a good night.

Since then I’ve been taking it quite easy, went to the beach on sunday with the family and dinner at night. Got a library card yesterday so I could borrow DVD’s from the library, which had a really good selection. So I will be going back for more. Today I’m heading in to the Big Apple to explore. Lovisa, a friend from home, and her sister Alex are in town for a couple of days so we’re going to have some afternoon beers.

And, I might be going upstate this weekend to Nantucket but this family has difficulties deciding on what to do so we’ll see. It’s the dads birthday as well, so I’m due to do something. Hope y’all back home are safe and sound. Even though I like it here, I have to admit I miss everyone crazy much and I’m counting down the days for my arrival to Sweden, which are 49 days left in the US and 50 days left to Swedish ground.

Love you. XOXO

Puppy love

The family decided to get a new family member a couple of days ago. Let me introduce you to Slicker. He’s a 11 weeks old toy puddle, but I can’t really say he’s much of a dog at all. Tried to pet him for a bit but he fell over… But he is the cutest little thing, looks mostly like a little ball of fur or like a little little lamb.’

Today Renee, the mum, gave me a manicure + pedicure as a little gift for being a good sport this first week. So now my toe nails are bright yellow. Kept the finger nails neutral, because they are really short and it just looks ugly with color then. Went to TJ.Maxx as well, which is the same as TK. Maxx in the UK and went home with two new pairs of sunglasses. Also found an absolutely gorgeous leather jacket, but didn’t have enough money with me to buy it so I will invest in it tomorrow. It’s a black DKNY, just like the one my old flatmate Sue has, so I know it will only look better as it goes older and more worn. An investment piece that is, and to be fair, I don’t have a black leather jacket….

Love you, miss you. XOXO

Sunday funday

So, second day in Darien, CT. Started with a lie in, had some breakfast and then spent the first half of the day watching How to make it in America while reading. You know me, I do love to multitask. Then we went for lunch at the beach club where I was left to supervise the kids while the grown ups were having lunch. It’s that kind of moment I guess you really feel like an au pair and an employee. It went alright, the little one fell asleep in my lap towards the end, broke my heart. Then I got to drive the car back to the house, which was strange. I still don’t really get the whole automatic thing, I miss shifting gear (after one day…).

Then I took the car for a little exploring trip around Darien, had a coffee at Starbucks which took forever (work habit) and then went to a big pharmacy, CVS, to get some sunblock, Skittles and In Style. When I got back I had dinner and then went over to Lovisa’s house, another Swedish au pair I’ve been in touch with. She and her friend Linn, yet another Swedish au pair, took me for a walk around Rowayton, which is an area next to Darien, only 5 minutes away. Some of the houses were really impressive, you can totally tell you’re in a very rich suburb of a big American city…

Still a bit jet legged so I’m gonna hit the sack, seems like the rest of the house is down for the night as well as it was pitch black when I got back. So good night my dears, hope I get to speak with some of you soon. Lots and lots and lots of love. XOXO

Wildlife

It’s a bit insane having nature as close as here. I wouldn’t say I’m a city kid per say, but I have never experienced anything like this. It’s 10 in the morning over here and I’ve been up since 8.30. Already I’ve seen four chipmunks (jordekorre), a couple of swans and the duck family. I have also played with the family hamster called Hammy together with Hannah. I will probably have most of the day off today so I’m jumping in the shower to get ready and hopefully one of the other au pairs I’ve been in contact with can meet over a cup of coffee.

I will get back to you with photos as soon as I can. Lots of love. XOXO

Americat

It’s been a while. I managed to go through with all my exams without a single fail. Even did better than I thought I would. I also managed to pack my life up and say good bye to the love of my life, Glasgow. It was difficult, but I know it’s not for forever, which makes it a bit easier. So I bet you guys are wondering what is going on. Sweden didn’t offer me any exciting jobs or plans for the summer, so when I was given an opportunity to spend two months in the bedroom suburb also known as Darien, Connecticut, 40 minutes by train from New York City, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

So yesterday I spent about 18 hours traveling to the States, anxious as hell and arrived at local time 11 pm to Darien. I’m staying with this really nice family, where the mum is swedish and they have to beautiful girls at 3 and 4, 5 years. And it is these two little girls I’m taking care of this summer. I’ve got my own room with my own little patio outside and this morning I woke up to the sound of the river and the bugs. I have already seen one swan, a duck family and 3 squirrels. It’s absolutely gorgeous, living with nature just outside your door.

I will try to update regularly this summer, so you can see what I’m doing with my time. I miss you all so much, don’t forget to comment and write to me. Love you ! XOXO

Money trumps everything

Just watching this Swedish documentary from the program Uppdrag gransking and it scares the shit out of me. They are examining the business of fillers, injections into the body to ”improve” it and apparently Sweden is one of few countries in the world where the one who injects the filler doesn’t have to have medical training, or any kind of training. It’s up to the VP of the company to decide if the person that does it has the competence to do it, even if the VP doesn’t have any competence in the area. It is absolutely crazy, and it is really really frightening that young girls are convinced by bloggers and advertising to go through with such a big procedure by a person with no official training or competence what so ever.

So everyone that is trying to decide whether to get that pouty lips or not, think one more time about where to go, if it is worth it and if you can live with the complications that can occur.

XOXO

Ashes to ashes

Doubt that anyone have missed the news about another ash cloud due to a vulcano eruption on Iceland has hit Europe. Why did I decide to study in Scotland, probably one of the first parts of Europe to be affected ? And why did I decide to fly home with Ryanair, probably the worst airline in a crisis ? So far, they’ve started to cancell flights at Edinburgh airport for today, so lets just hope this will all go away before friday next week. I know, it’s over a week left to my departure, but with my luck it wouldn’t surprise me if it got worst over the week.

Oh, I really wanna go home next week ! Miss you all.

XOXO
